LAB 051: BHM: HBCU Edition

About This Lab

It’s Black History Month so for this lab we are focusing on HBCUs! HBCU stands for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and these are high education institutions that were founded before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which made it illegal to discriminate against a person based on their race, color, religion, nationality, and later on sexual orientation and gender identity. So, before this act was passed into law HBCUs were the only place that Black people were allowed pursue high education.

Currently there are over 100 HBCUs in the United States with a majority being in the south. More and more we are seeing that students interested in going to college are choosing HBCUs, including some high profile athletes.

In the media HBCUs have been highlighted in movies like School Daze - a Spike Lee Joint, in television on show like A Different World, and even in concert like Beyonce’s iconic Homecoming Coachella performance.

Homecoming at HBCUs are a event like none other. Our very own Zakiya Whatley not only attended an HBCU, Hampton University, but also grew up in Greensboro, NC a town with the largest HBCU in the Nation, North Carolina A&T. Our guest for this lab is long-time friend to the show and Florida A&M University Alum, Xavier Jernigan. Zakiya and X take us through the life on campus, traditions, HBCU pride, homecoming, and what it means to be a product of an HBCU.
